On January 17, the “Decoding Zhonghua” International Conference on Dialogue Among Civilizations was held in Beijing. The conference aimed to establish a platform for dialogue, exploring the values of the Chinese nation and the global significance of modern Chinese civilization.
Under the theme “Pursuing Harmonious Coexistence of Civilizations Through Dialogue,” the conference invited approximately 20 experts, scholars, cultural figures, and renowned Vloggers from China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Spain and Brazil to participate in in-depth discussions.
The first session, focusing on "Community for the Chinese Nation and Global Community of Shared Future," featured discussions by prominent figures such as Professor Ma Rong from Peking University; Professor Javier García Fernández at Renmin University; Researcher Xu Jianying at the Institute of Chinese Borderland Studies; Professor John B. Cobb, Jr., Founding President of the Institute for Postmodern Development of China (IPDC); President of the Tibetan Studies Institute, Minzu University of China Su Faxiang; Researcher Melissa Cambuhy at Brazil’s Instituto Lula, and Director and Professor Wang Zhen of the Office of Education and Research on Ethnic Religions.
Scholars unanimously acknowledged that Chinese civilization, created and shared by various ethnic groups, embodies the enduring excellence of traditional Chinese culture, characterized by the emphasis on "harmony" in interethnic interactions. Building a Chinese nation community draws wisdom from the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, contributing to addressing global issues.
The second session, themed "Modern Chinese Civilization and Common Values of Humanity," included discussions by Jean Monnet Chair Professor Wang Yiwei; Senior Researcher Einar Tangen of Taihe Institute; Vice Dean of the School of Social Sciences Zhao Kejin; Vlogger Stuart Wiggin; Professor Song Nianshen from Tsinghua Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences; Japanese painter and cultural scholar Fujishima Hirofumi; President Xu Baofeng of the Belt and Road Academy and Director of the World Sinology Center, Beijing Language and Culture University.
Attendees emphasized that the innovative, inclusive, and peaceful characteristics inherent in Chinese civilization are vital to the continuous vitality of the Chinese nation and serve as a source of values for promoting global peace, security, prosperity, and progress. They called for a reevaluation of modernization, breaking free from "Western-centric" perspectives, and constructing modern Chinese civilization based on shared human values. The conference also saw the release of two research projects, indicating a commitment to international communication in the field of ethnic studies.
